Start of the 2017 regatta season with the Trofeo Princesa Sofia

When the Bay of Palma fills up with sailing boats, it’s regatta time. From the 24 March to 1 April one of the most important regattas in Mallorca and the Mediterranean takes place: the Trofeo Princesa Sofia.

Sailing in Mallorca has a rich tradition; that’s the reason the best racers from around the world come to participate in the race. The 48th edition of the world famous race looks to be one of the most innovative in recent memory.

The Princesa Sofia marks the beginning of the Mediterranean’s regatta season

Around 600 teams from all over the world are expected to take part in the Trofeo Princesa Sofia. This year, the participating teams will face a major challenge, since there are changes to the competition format to be applied for the first time that could have an important impact on the rest of year’s regattas. Of these changes, the most important for the Olympic categories are in the 49er FX, traditionally for women which this year has women’s teams, men’s teams and mixed ones. On this website there is information on departure times and other relevant information.

How to enjoy the race on land

The world level sailing regattas such as the Trofeo Princesa Sofía require perfect interaction between the entire racing crew, technique and the rules. Racers follow rigorous training and prepare for months for these races. On their sailing boats experience and technical knowledge come together. Unlike other sports, regattas do not have a pre-determined course; it is established before each race and depends on the wind and climate conditions.

Whoever isn’t able to see the race from up close on a support vessel, may do so from on land. The best option is to go to the port before the regatta starts and see the sailing boats and their majestic routes. However, you can also go to the beach or any café looking out over the sea, and using a pair of binoculars you can enjoy the show, watching hundreds of colourful sailing boats on the sea.
