Valentine’s Day in Mallorca: enjoy romance by the sea

Saint Valentine’s Day is celebrated on 14th February in many places in the world. It’s the day when millions of loving couples celebrate their mutual love, and show it with gifts and tokens of affection.

Many people think that the day is a marketing exercise invented by retailers, but, its origins can be traced all the way back to the time of the Roman Empire.

Saint Valentine was a priest who ministered to his flock in Rome in the third century. At that time marriage between youngsters was forbidden, because it was believed that single young men made better soldiers. As a priest Valentine felt this was an unfair restriction and he continued marrying young couples in love, clandestinely.

Nowadays, 14th February is a day for loving couples to give each other Valentine’s Day gifts, usually, chocolates, flowers or teddy bears.

Traditionally the celebration has been associated with the English-speaking world, but it has slowly spread to all corners of the planet. It is a day that can be marked in many different ways.

For example, not many years ago the custom spread to Japan, where it’s now customary for women to give chocolate to men, whether they’re their partners, friends or co-workers. One month later, on 14th March, men are the ones doing the giving, handing over white presents on what is known as “White Day”.

In other countries, especially in South America, in addition to the day of love, Valentine’s day is also the day of friendship. In Colombia, for example, it’s celebrated with a “Secret Friend” game, which involves inserting the names of the participants in a container, redistributing them and agreeing a date for handing over secret presents.
